Our Heritage

For many years in the late 1800's and early 1900's, Eugene S. "Beansie" Sullivan, ran his funeral home out of his Spruce Street location in Winchester.  His nephews, John  W. Lane Jr. and Eugene Lane, worked for their uncle learning his trade.

After Beansie passed away in the 1930's John and Eugene decided to open their own funeral home under their name.  They bought the existing home at 760 Main Street and thus Lane Funeral Home was started and incorporated in 1938.  In the 1960's both of their sons, John III and Eugene Jr. respectively began learning alongside their fathers.  The young sons were apprentices and then both joined the armed services, John in the US Airforce and Gene in the US Army.  After their tours of duty they returned and attended embalming school.  Both John and Eugene worked side by side with their sons until Eugene passed away after a long illness in the 1970's.

John Sr. continued as President of Lane Funeral Home and John III and Gene Jr. continued working for him.  And then in 1990 John Jr. passed away suddenly.

Today John and Gene are still working side by side and are proud to carry on a family business that they love.  They are honored to be a part of the family that has been serving the Winchester community for over 100 years.
